"Dreamgirls" Breaks Record in Opening Weekend

Although it only opened in three theatres Dec. 15 — playing roadshow screenings at Manhattan's Ziegfeld Theatre, Hollywood's Cinerama Dome and San Francisco's Metreon — the new DreamWorks/Paramount film "Dreamgirls" has already broken a box-office record.

The New York Post reports that the film brought in an estimated $360,000, averaging $120,000 per theatre. That number is the highest per-screen opening ever for a movie musical. "Dreamgirls" is currently playing ten days at the three theatres with a $25 ticket price. The film, which was recently nominated for five Golden Globe Awards, will open nationwide Dec. 25.

The roadshow screenings feature reserved seating, an intermission, "Dreamgirls"-themed lobby displays and merchandise booths and a limited-edition program.

Directed by Bill Condon, "Dreamgirls" stars Jennifer Hudson as Effie, Beyoncé Knowles as Deena Jones, Anika Noni Rose as Lorrell Robinson, Jamie Fox as Curtis Taylor Jr., Eddie Murphy as James "Thunder" Early and Danny Glover as Marty. Director Bill Condon also wrote the film's screenplay based on the late Tom Eyen's book. The film employs most of the original score by Eyen and Henry Krieger as well as four new tunes: "Love You I Do" (for Effie), "Listen" (for Deena), "Patience" (for James "Thunder" Early) and "Perfect World" (for Teddy Campbell, a child musical sensation rising alongside The Dreams).

The new movie musical received five Golden Globe nominations earlier this week: Best Motion Picture-Comedy or Musical, Best Performance By an Actress in a Motion Picture-Comedy or Musical (Beyoncé Knowles), Best Performance By an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture (Jennifer Hudson), Best Performance By an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture (Eddie Murphy) and Best Original Song-Motion Picture ("Listen"). "Dreamgirls" will vie for the Best Motion Picture-Comedy or Musical Golden Globe in a field that also includes "Borat," "The Devil Wears Prada," "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Thank You for Smoking."

Destiny's Child Among Rollingstone's Richest Rock Stars!

Destiny's Child and Sean "Diddy" Combs had huge paydays in 2005, which led to their appearances at No. 14 and 15 respectively on Rolling Stone magazine's "Richest Rock Stars Of 2006" list. The retired R&B trio of Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams earned $24.8 million last year, while the Bad Boy Entertainment founder netted $24.3 million in 2005, mostly from selling his Bad Boy Records label to the Warner Music Group and revenue from his Sean John clothing line.

Rapper 50 Cent placed 19th with estimated earnings of $10 million from his G-Unit clothing line, video game deal, Reebok deal, touring, royalties, and his movie “Get Rich Or Die Tryin’.” His mentor, Eminem, ranked No. 21 with $17.8 million. Jay-Z followed at No. 22 with $17.5 million, with $3 million of the total coming from his estimated salary as president of Def Jam Records. The remainder came from the sale of Roc-A-Fella Records and proceeds from the Rocawear clothing line. Kanye West and Dr. Dre both earned $16.9 million to rank 25th.

Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams and Floetry’s Natalie Stewart are teaming up with several other celebs to benefit the non-profit organization, Girls Educational & Mentoring Services (GEMS). The two will be part of an all-star cast that includes actresses Kerry Washington, Alysia Reiner and news reporter Toni Senecal to perform in the Harlem production of the award-winning stage play, The Vagina Monologues. The performance will take place March 27 at 6 p.m. at the Apollo Theater. Proceeds from the one-night performance will benefit the GEMS organization.

This week, our divas reign the charts yet again. DC's #1's collection slips to #5, selling 85,034 copies this week, with only a 25% decrease in sales, which is GREAT, and with the ladies appearing on Oprah today, sales should stay strong. In total, the album has sold 198,840. It also only slips one spot to #2 on the R&B albums chart! In other good news, 8 Days of Christmas makes it's seasonal debut for the fourth year in a row on Billboard's Holiday Album chart at #37. Destiny Fulfilled, unfortunately, falls to #78 on the R&B Albums chart.

Kelly & Trina's "Here We Go" jumps four places to #24. It also leaps 6 spots to #9 on the R&B 100, making this Kelly's 2nd Top 10 on the chart. It also moves one spot, back to it's peak, #6, on Rap Tracks.

Beyoncé's "Check On It" (which I guess I must mention, much to my dislike, features Slim Thug) has debuted at #72 on the Hot 100! It rockets 20 places to #39 on the Pop 100. Dangerously In Love also makes it's debut at #45 on the Pop Catalog chart
